I know how to select vertexes by dragging a box around all of the ones you want, but there are always some vertexes that I don't want that sneak in there. Is there a way to deselect these while keeping the rest of the vertexes selected?

Hold a modifier key (option i think) and drag over the unwanted vetrtice/s.
