Screenshots would be nice.

Do you still need specular maps? How fast is it?
Opening maps in 2.5 b8 Editor I still see no slider to zoom in. OK, maybe it's me. I open my map, I see things from above, a lot of objects cluttered on each other. I want to zoom in to precisely select one. How do I do that? In the past there was a slider for zoom in. Now I have to move the camera vertically using Space Bar.
I move the cam down, adjust the object placement in detail. I move the cam up, cool, fine, everything is in place. I Hit Cmd-R, player falls from the sky and dies.
Not convenient.

Specular and bumps are not required.

Do you have a mouse with a wheel? The wheel does the same as the magnify used to do.

Brian, I meant "Do you need specular maps to make something specular"?
I have the "device-with-a-scrollball-that-can-only-scroll-in-one-direction-after-two-weeks-because-of-human-sweat-and-stuff" that some at Apple call a mouse, yes.

The ones I've seen are, and the doom 3 ones are, and so that's what I'm doing, so yes.

90% are going to be grayscale, but colored spec maps are really useful, what they do, is set the color of the specular shine, which allows some pretty neat effects. They also allow you to make the shine white even if the texture is red, and you do this by making the spec map color the OPPOSITE color of the color-map.
