There is no programm in the whole world that can automatically create convincing 3D models from 2D images.

Like Bink said, no program can build 3D models automatically.
But most 3D programs (including wings), have a feature where you can import an image backdrop to help you build a model. Obviously, you still have to build the model yourself, but having your drawing in the background as a reference can make it easier to build models. (this is pretty basic stuff, so sorry if you already know this)
Wings calls it an "Image Plane." I don't use wings anymore so I can't give you detailed instructions, but you add it the same way you add any other geometry to your model.

Not to sound rude, but I have found a 3D program that does that, AutoDesk Inventor.
You draw the front view on a 2D plane and then you Extrude or Revolve the pieces to form your desired object(s).
The only problem is that this program is for Windows. Those of us that are lucky enough to have a Intel Mac or a spare pc will find this program amazingly accurate and precise. So far, I'm not sure if you can convert your 3D objects to .obj.
Besides that, Wings 3D is a wonderful program to use.

I'd never looked at Inventor before. It looks interesting, but it's basically a CAD tool -- trying to create game models with it seems like it would be a nightmare. Anyway, I kind of doubt that anyone here is in the market for >$1000 apps.
If you have money to spend, mac-compatible Cheetah3D can rotate and extrude spline curves from SVG drawings (and it's only 99EUR!), but, again, the models you get by doing this don't end up looking much like your drawings, which makes it not very useful for game models.
