I need help texturing. I tend to make my model's using lots and lots of small parts attached, and often embedded in, larger parts put together to make a body.

And yet i need to accurately texture even the smallest parts. How would i texture a model like this one made in Wings 3d.

The model is little rough but you get the idea.

the models great! (though i recommend fixing up where the trigger should be before UV mapping it).
the way you would want to uv map that is very hard, yea right!
make sure that the model looks like it used a virtual mirror, what i mean by that is there is an extra edgeloop circleing around the model. then select the each side of the model separately, then do continue projectile normal. now go and use edge selections, go to the main window and elect the edges around the model (as in the edges i told you to add in the beginning of this post. now scale uniorm. your done Smile.

Thanks.

Will having parts that are half embedded in other parts affect it?. For instance, the grenade launcher is a complete cylinder partially embedded in it's mount.

I usually seperate all pieces of the model away from each other, then manually assign each face to a certain UV color, it takes a lot longer but It's well worth it.

i usaully do to, but with a gun you don't notice as much. i would just weld them first, you don't have to though.

I think i'll probably wind up texturing some of the most complicated bits seperately. I'll texture the m203 seperately from the gun, the barrel assembly seperate from the reciver and so on.

Its a good model because i have an airsoft m4. I sat with the real m4 in my lap while i modeled so its actually lacking lots of details that i had to leave out due to polygon count.
Thats a sweet m4!!!

Usually, when I texture the gun I try as much as possible to break it apart and texture each indivual component seperately (i.e: scope, stock, barrel assembly, m203, grips, receiver, magazine) it keeps it a lot cleaner and easier to edit afterwards. Also, as much reference material is possible is always helpful, (especially with the fire selector and other detailed parts) since you have an airsoft gun I suggest taking pictures of various parts of your gun. If that fails you, you can almost always find photoshoppable pictures on the internet of the real steel version,

P.S: Whats the polycount on that gun? The grips and grenade launcher could use a bit more detail.
Yes, that's the texturing route I decided to take. I've already turned a copy of this gun into an m16 which is fully textured and looks pretty good. I'm probably going to re-do the m4 before I use it at all.

Among the weapons I have planned are

M16a2 (completely textured, scripted, ready to go.)

M16a4 MWS (in progress) This is a new weapon used primarily by the marine corps, it can be outfitted with a large number of different modifications normally used on the m4a1 SOPMOD. I plan to be the first person to impliment m16 MWS mods in a game. Smile Due to the constraints of dim3, modifiable weapons will come in three different modifactions designed for different uses, rather than being fully customizable by the player.

M4 (in progress) An unmodified m4 will be used on certain maps.

M4a1 (modeled but untextured as seen above. I may re-do it) Three different modifications will be availible, each features a different aiming device.

More exotic weapons may be added later such as the austrailian Steyr AUG and the german G36C.

The bad guys have a slightly less interesting invintory. Each of thier weapons is the equivilent of one of the US weapons.

AK47 (rough mockup only) Equivilient to the M16a2.

AK74 with modifications (in progress) Equivilent to the M16a4.

AK74SU (rough mockup only) Equivilent to the M4.

AK74SU with modifications (rough mockup only) Equivilent to the M4a1 SOPMOD
Cool Smile Maybe you could post the m16 onto the dim3 model gallery when everything's all polished and artsy fartsy
mebbe, i don't know. I'm thinking I may need to update the m16 a bit as well. It has a couple problems.
