hi im new to dim3 Smile im a big game player (have to admit im good with a mouse and keyboard or a controller...lol, mainly FPS games)...anyways...i got an "adventure" report thingy from my school (grade 10), so my teacher said i could make a game Smile which of coruse looks great but now im gonna have this thing due in less than a month and i have no clue what im doing

first off...i REALLY want this to run on windows. REALLY badly. i want to bring my class into the computer lab and play it (multiplayer if possible :O). also, i want to make it as original and well...not particularly violent because i dont want to get a lower grade cuz of violence. ive decided mabe i can have the guy shooting like basketballs into basketball hoop enemies, but of course when i opened Animator i had no clue what to do. i also want to do some scripting on the map i make (just like, you need to kill a guy to open the door, etc)...

also i want a "boss", i was thinking maybe like Shaq (i know this seems too crazy, if its not possible, which i bet is true, then im fine), who like blocks your shots, but occassionally leaves an opening...and he like attacks u also...it would be cool

ive got an imac g5...2.1 Ghz, 1.5 GB of RAM, 20 inch screen...its pretty sweet...(sidenote: and i got one of those awesome new ipod nanos! go me!)

i tried to put a basketball thingy into the Textures, it was a png and 200x200, yet it said it needed to be a multiple of 2 ??? lol

im...quite proficiant with Photoshop, mainly at things like Signatures tho...hmm...to the people who help me with this: free signatures! lol, ill show u one ive been working on, its not done yet tho

were big about our sports down here in Deeeetroit Smile

anyway, ill give my AIM and MSN and Xfire, just in case somebody can help me personally.

dim3 is a rapid development environment, but that's a real tight deadline.  You might want to think about what part you want to do and then get as far as you can with that.  For instance, just getting a couple new weapons and a new map.

It can easily be done if you put the work into it, but you'll have to not make too many false starts.

Any project you make automatically runs on windows.  Just download the windows runtime and then put in the same data folder you have on the mac version, it'll just work.

Sounds neat.  I'd start with creating an arena, first.  Then use the demo assets to get some of the scripting down, then end the end replace the models.

OpenGL, which is what it runs under, requires textures in the power of 2 (modern cards can work around this, but it's slower.)

hm...yeah im not looking for anything huge, just 1 single player map, MAYBE 1 multiplayer map, new guns, new enemies...and thats about it, tho a new player would be cool too

can u sorta explain better (ima n00b to this, sorry :/ ) do u mean making a multiplayer map first and then using scripting...or something? lol....

so what do i do...basically what im trying is...not even shure this will work...i made a new thingy in Animator, then i imported the mesh from that green bally thingy, then i just wanted to retexture the whole thing to sorta look like a basketball mabe

is that good?

Basically, pick an area you want to start and concentrate on that first. My suggestion was make the arena first (arena, I mean the map you'll play the game in.) This should be one of the easiest things to do if the map is more simple (i.e., a basketball arena.)

That should work, though I can't be sure because I'm not positive how well uv-mapped (which tells which vertexes related to which position on the texture) the green ball is. I'd do this a bit simplier, though.

1) Redo your texture so it's a power of 2. Scale it to 128x128, that's good for you texture which is all high-contrast
2) Save the texture as a PNG
3) Take the green ball model and duplicate the folder
4) Rename it "basketball" (the folder)
5) Inside there, there's a bitmaps folder, then a texture folder, and a single texture
6) Rename you new PNG to be the same as that texture, and replace

That's it, you should have a version of the green fire ball that's a basketball (again, if the UVs are correct.)

i just had an idea...not shure if this is possible or anything, but like if someone could, like, make an actual basketball? that would play out like a real game? cuz that would be amazing, like a first person basketball, lol. all it would have to be is a gun, other people would have like a powerful melee that hurts alot, so you can kill him and get the ball (his gun)...would this be possible? cuz it would be the most amazing multiplayer!

anyway, thanks for the help :p ill be back HAHAHAHAHAHA
Hey nice texture, I suggest going into photoshop and Filter>>Texture>>Texturizer>>Sandstone it to give it bumps, assuming you have photoshop.

So first off you have to make models which you seem to know how to, correct me if I'm wrong, and make the arena map.

The map editor: You said you wanted a single and possibly multiplayer map... I'll tell you now that the multiplayer gameplay will probably be much easier to implement for sure because you don't need AI, although you can add some bots to play with. For singleplayer maps I suggest taking JoeFoe and modifying it. Because JoeFoe's a nodewalker you can put various notes arounbd the bbal court and half him walk them when he gets the ball, or else he follows the player. Smile

I agree with Brian, a month is a tight deadline. We'll help you as much as possible along the way when you ask a question, so good luck!
i dont think i know how to make a , im just trying to use the globey type thingy and texture it with a basketball so it looks like a basketball, then use it for multiple things (guns, shots, etc)...

i dont really need any intensive AI, like i dont really need a computer player mode (i wanna try the basketball mode for the Multiplayer), they can just run up and attack, and that would be fine for Single Player, tho im not shuer what i want them to look like, maybe JoeFoe with a basketball jersey and armband....lol

i did have a few ideas tho, the MP map could be, like, the actual stadium, which could also be the "boss" part of the level, sort of like Metal of Honor, with the baseball field (except its not really interactive and its not the last level but its still the same idea...)

Did you try the steps I listed above? That should work.

You month deadline puts you in a real bind, but after that's over, if you'd like to continue with making games, modeling is probably one of the first things you'll want to try. Right now, though, you need to get a move on so replace the green fire ball is your best bet.

Hey, welcome to the dim3 forum! Smile
Making a (small) game in a month is possible with some help.
I'd like to help out as best as I can, maybe make a player model or enemy models and animate them if you want. I'm not too good at it though. :annoyed:
Just let me know if there is anything you need, and I will try my best to do it. Smile
I did a game in about a month. Not a solid month though. I just kept most of the origional content including textures and player script.

Gangsta Clash beta 0.1.5

It's multiplayer only so you need a LAN network and a second computer to play.
