i have the same question for my first multiplayer aimed game Spawned (Working Title (WT), in development, using Cinema 4D for the models).
might it be possible to choose from lets say 6 characters in the main menu and declare it first before loading the whole gameroom? i think that is what "bigger" games do to. you set a few declaration variables in the main menu and the game uses those variable declarations to find what's needed to load a gameroom.
Example:
MAIN MENU (between ** is chosen!)
- player character - jane doe, *john doe*, klesk, jack sparrow, dude, neo
- number of bots - 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 *8* 9 10
- level - *middle of nowhere*, caribean, matrix, dmlvl17+
- done? - no, *yes*
now the game declarates and loads the chosen variables.
edit: and if the main menu of DIM3 can't support more then one layout you could use the main menu for a welcoming screen to set the game-running options that are normally under options such as screensize and sound etc.
