Though, I must say, I'm not particularly impressed with the 48 pages in my first issue. I remember it being a lot bigger in the past. Maybe half of it got torn off by the mail man.

I believe that's only for previous subscriptions.

It's a little concealed fact that GDM is basically free, but due to some regulation or another they have solicit subscriptions. This used to be a great magazine but it's simply pathetic now. Used to have lots of great technical articles, but now it's almost 50% full page ads, and the rest of the content is either weak or practically more ads. The post-mortems are all big game studios patting themselves on the back. There's nothing in these for indie developers anymore.

I finally decided to let my subscription to it lapse (I also got a free one a while back). It's funny, they sent out the next issue with a reminder to renew it. I got two or three shrill email reminders ("you'd have to pay lots of money for this otherwise, you know!!"). The issue after that had a full front page cover talking about how the magazine really is free, but due to their auditors they have to have a subscription request from everyone (wink wink). So you'd better renew now or not get any more!!!

Next month, another one showed up in my mailbox. I basically don't even bother to read them anymore.

Yeah, I wouldn't bother.

It's not. That's how I got mine, and GDMag told me to tell you about it. :)

Yeah, most of it looks pretty useless, but there is some stuff about approaches to physics and character animation in the current one, so it may have some use left in it for those of us who don't know this stuff or want to read it from somewhere else. So... I'll at least look at it. It's free... It can't hurt. :D

That's American culture, there. :ninja: Lots of free things are pretty awful, like these "sign up for offers and get a free Xbox" things. In my particular case I want them to stop sending it to me because it wastes trees (which I think are pretty :)) and it takes up space in my house (very limited).

But yeah, they do occasionally have something. It's just such a sad parody of what it used to be, and when I really need something I can usually find it online. Plus I think they are now posting PDFs of GDM online anyway, on Gamasutra. Though I haven't tried to find/use that myself.

Well, cancer is free too.
