...which still needs a name

Updates since last build:
-Player can die, and it looks frikkin sweet.
-Few more turrets
-Wonderful new particle effects
-More sound
-Music by a not-normally-musical friend

I suggest you take it out of windowed mode and set the resolution as close to 1024x768 as you can get. No matter what, the game will run in a 1024x500 box.

PPC only atm, but rumor has it there's no noticeable performance hit.

I still need a level designer. Pretty please? Fame and prestige! It won't be just turrets, you know.

-1 level (look at the data file for my easy format.)

That was cool, first feeling I had...when I bombed everything was "I want to bomb more stuff" and there it was, copy paste, and change one character each line, instant population. Neat.

I still need a level designer or artist or musician.

You'll get 'em!;)

PPC only atm.
Runs fine on intel, save the occasionally stuttering when moving across screens.

I believe you will find Defender in this wikipedia article on SHMUPs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoot_'em_up). Expand your SHMUP-mind.

I usually class all these games as shooters, and only vertical ones as shoot'em'ups, especially the abbreviation shmup.

Thanks Bill, I guess it's a good thing if players immediately desire more content.

I generally prefer "thoughtful" shooters to hyper-fast-screen-full-of-bullets shooters. That's why it seems slow.

Levels will hopefully end up being longer. I'll probably put in a way to spawn multiple, similar enemies at horizontal intervals so you can make a line of turrets, or UFOs.

Stuttering between screens is a result of my creating and destroying OpenGL contexts. I wipe the slate clean when I go into the game so I can have easy fullscreen code.

I have a musician now, but a level designer would be GREAT.

Edit: update. see first post.

So R-Type is not a shmup? Or any of the other horizontal shooters?

Mm, horizontal shmups are horizontal shmups (gotta love Gradius V) i didnt say it wasnt a shmup, it just didnt feel like one to me. Often in shmups you cant stop and turn around, drop bombs vertically etc. but defender indeed is a shoot em up. :P

i recommend you make a topic about this on the forums here and ask what people like: http://www.shmups.com/

So Jets'n'Guns (http://jng.rakeingrass.com/) isn't a shooter? ;)

New version up again, this one's worth it. Player death, a few more turrets to play with, cool particle effects, more sound, and music. (Don't worry, Taxxodium, I want to use yours too. I just wanted to help this guy break out of his creative shell.)

Edit: New one again, things are prettier.

I officially do not have enough time to finish anything worth playing by the contest deadline. Since there aren't any prizes, I don't care much. However, I do want to continue developing this as a salable game, so I welcome suggestions, but I don't know if I'll be putting up any more test builds after the contest deadline.

Taxxodium, drop me an email, because I still want to work with you.

Keep posting this game.
The contest is there to light some fire under you, thats all.

I would totally be level designing if there was
not bigger things pressing against my back right now.

Always the contests come when pressing things are happening,
never when I'm bored and directionless. Whats up with that?

Keep it going here, get it as great as Chopper, remember Chopper?
It started WAY crude and over 90 days became gold.

Remember GLGolf? That started out so basic, and made millions of dollars*.
