Hello.

I am working on a game called Code Wars. It is inspired by a freeware 'beta' (read never really finished) game called Dark Signs (http://darksigns.com). It is a console-based hacking simulator where you need to connect to various 'servers', steal files, etc to complete the game. It features a BASIC-like scripting language called Xscript that all missions and servers are written in. I hope for it to be very customisable.

We are a little way from a playable alpha but I am keeping a development log (http://room65.co.uk/forums/index.php?board=7.0) to keep people up to date with our progress. A forum (http://www.room65.co.uk/forums) has also been established for the game.

On a side note - we are desperately in need of a web designer to help build our website. If you are at all interested then please email us (room65software@gmail.com).

Thanks,

Looks pretty cool! I'll be looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

That Dark Signs website looks suspiciously like the interface in the similarly themed game Uplink.

That Dark Signs website looks suspiciously like the interface in the similarly themed game Uplink.

What in that they are both blue and black coloured?

The two games are very different. Uplink was a point-and-click graphical interface with Hollywood style hacking whereas as DS (as similarly) Code Wars are:

- Text based
- More realistic
- Feature the ability to write your own programs

I think Uplink was an inspiration to many as it essentially created a whole new gaming genre.

Just FYI, that genre has been around for along time, I played freeware games for my Atari ST that had the same hacking concept (albeit more similair to Dark Signs/Code Wars than Uplink, more like "hacking", less like "hollywood")

There was also a hacking based game called Hacker for the ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 back in 1985.

I stand corrected in that case

Hopefully I can add a new twist to the genre...

I have released an alpha version of Code Wars (http://room65.co.uk/files/Code%20Wars_a1.dmg) (Mac only for this release, the Linux and Windows versions are MUCH too buggy).

You can get it here.

There is no gameplay as such at the moment. I'm really looking for people to test the robustness of my scripting engine. I would advise reading the included user's guide PDF.

Please could you leave any bugs, comments or suggestions over at my forums (http://www.room65.co.uk/forums), thanks.

I started a (small) game like that once to see what it would be like....
Cool idea :)!
I haven't tested this yet, I might try later....
