View Full Version : Need Wiki hint for community project

I was tasked with finding a wiki solution for the community project. Unfortunately, I have yet to find one I deem usable. Below a list of desired features ordered in their importance:

Must use preinstalled stuff of my host (no ruby on rails or such)
preemptive spam avoidance (logins, rights restrictions, mass rollback, etc.)
Extremely easy to administer (less I'd hang myself)
Easy and non-proprietary backups
The less custom code additions needed to the wiki, the better
Code colorisation for our future projects language(s)
Changeable layout commands (eg. bulletin board tags)

I am currently looking at erfurtwiki (http://erfurtwiki.sourceforge.net/) and mediawiki (http://www.mediawiki.org/), and also am still considering tikiwiki (http://tikiwiki.org/) (due to being able to install it automatically via fantastico). However, none of those really feel right to me, so if you have any suggestions, let me know.

Use mediawiki :)

Use mediawiki; it's tested and tried, and is now (I think) the standard. Everyone else agree?

I personally hate mediawiki -- it's vastly overfeatured, not exactly straightforward to administer, and attracts spam like a magnet. That said, it pretty much *is* the standard.

You didn't say what your host is though, so it's hard to give suggestions :p

Go to opensourcecms.com and try all the demos. I thought Wikka and Wakka *spell?) amoung the best.

If we used Trac (http://trac.edgewall.org/), we'd not only have a Wiki, but a ticketing system and svn integration as well. I'm not sure how closely it fits your requirements, though, since I only started using it recently...

Trac looks nice, as the coders would want a svn or similar anyway. However, it won't run on my site, as it needs python. So we could use that, if someone else hosts it, or I'll install a wiki (most likely Wikka (http://wikkawiki.org)) on my site, and we look for a svn solution later on.

I'm happy to host subversion and trac for the project if wanted, though I don't know much about administering trac...
