Greetings,
I just announced to the staff that I have at long last combined all our data since 1998, which is a huge milestone in returning iDevGames to its former glory; a needed step before I can once again concentrate on cool contests like uDevGames.
Once the front page (content sections) are up and running for the general public, I'd like to ask new members who are interestd in reporting news, or that can help with content editing/proofing, to contact me.
I'd also like to let all Uber Members know that I was inspired to make some sprites the other day and will post them in the Uber Member section. (Thanks for your donations and your support guys!) As for the rest of the game assets, that will come once the content of the main site is sorted out.
Cheer,

OSC can speak japanese? :ninja: What can't he do?
Anyway, I'm glad! If Inkubator goes well, we may not even need a uDG; we can just focus our creative powers onto this project.

OSC, what language is that? O.o
Bablefish can't seem to translate it from chinese to enlish, or japanese to english :\

Use translate.google.com - It's Japanese.

Not that Google translate does a good job of it; it's too idiomatic I guess. http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/cgi-bin/wwwjdic.cgi?9T does much better.
Babelfish doesn't work because they declare their page encoding as ISO-8859-1... eedjits. The dashboard translation widget uses the same back end as babelfish and does OK.

Babelfish + Firefox works... or at least, it gives a seemingly reasonable result ("it was hardship"); I've no idea if it is correct though ;)

"Thanks for all your hard work" is probably a good translation.

Yes that is correct.
I'm wondering how many old-timers are no longer active in our community. I haven't lurked/posted here much since I came back from Japan.

You could always ask them to post if they are inactive....

What constitutes an old timer? I don't really consider myself one, but others might disagree...

I imagine most of the "old timers" are like myself... we turned into lurkers as the rest of life became more demanding.

Hah, it's funny how many people still lurk around. I read the forums a few times each week to keep up on what people are up to. I always admire people who post a build a day of some pet project.
Count me in as a lurker.

I haven't been so much of a lurker as I have been as Brigadoon -- appearing once every 100 years or so. :-) But it was exciting to come back this cycle and see interest in a great looking Inkubator project bubbling up! :)
Wow, DaFalcon, I had no idea you were still stopping by occasionally :)

Mostly posting for the benefit of Josh whom apparently had a recent bout of apoplexy when I posted in another forum on iDG.
I stopped lurking a long time ago when my iDG account got zapped under mysterious circumstances. I moved on to CMG that was starting up at the time, which subsequently vanished. At that point, I moved away from game dev. altogether. The last I recall I beta tested Midnight Mansion. Fast forward to now, I reopened an account about a month ago and occasionally drop by for a look-see.

The domain name owner and person in control of the hosting faded away from the the game development scene so that was the end of that.

I lurk and post when relevant, although most of my efforts have shifted into running Graveck Interactive, LLC and making things with Unity.

I read occasionally. I'm not an old-timer in that I was never a very skilled developer, but I've been around a long time so in that respect I am.
I've been doing primarily web development lately. Not as exciting, but it's easier to do it all myself, whereas I had to rely on people for game making.

I can't say I'm even lurking more than once a month anymore. Life is just sucking up too much time between work, college (Geology major, lots of work) and what little programming I do get to do.
Edit: For those that don't remember me, my old account got dumped a couple years ago when Carlos dumped inactive users, I've been here a lot longer than 05.

It's good to see some familiar names from the old days! I'm glad to see Carlos is back in action, too.
I'm constantly in the IRC channel, but I rarely pay attention to the forums these days, I'm afraid. I drop by occasionally. My focus is now mostly on Unity, so their forums contain more relevant material for me.
I'm still making games (http://www.nether.org.uk/bad_mac_code.html#phoenix_final), though. :)

Our host is running a special promotion now.
Our current monthly hosting cost is $44.50.
Spec: 384MB, 10GB HD, 250GB Bandwidth
Note: This isn't a typical virtual hosting account which can be had for $9 these days. This is a virtual server (VPS) account.
The special is 50% off $119.95 (lifetime price) for:
768MB, 25GB HD, 600GB Bandwidth
So for $59.97 we would be stepping up to an account that offers near to dedicated performance. What we had in our hay-day. This is extremely tempting. Our host has been VERY good for the past 2 years and when we go down, it is mostly to high forum traffic making us hit our account's ceiling. On the other hand, I no longer live in that fantasy world called "Japan", and must watch every dollar. I have a couple of hours to decide before the 50% coupon is no longer valid.
In related news.... We paid for a year's worth of hosting almost 1 year ago. In 40 days, we will be required to pay for our next year's hosting. ($44.50x12)
Hmm...

Given the scale of iDevgames nowadays, wouldn't it be worth looking into 'sub-letting' from one of the member's Macs. Apart from the potential cost saving, you also (in theory) end up with someone in the same room as the server that actually checks the site once in a while (rather than some remotely hired hosting company) and is likely to have installed recent security updates.
That or hit Apple for the ok to run iDevgames off a .Mac account without risk of bandwidth limits taking the site off line every month. Apple have been pretty good with some devs in the past so it's always worth a try.

Especially if the plan is still to get iDG back to its glory days. :)

I'd say go for it. We want to be optimistic right?
:ninja:
It would be great to have that bandwidth and space to use, but will funding it be problematic? Perhaps Apple could help us out with funding being the premiere Mac game development community ;).

On topic:
I don't really understand the question. Is it about saying yes to more bandwidth? I'd say, more bandwidth is always nice, as long as someone else is paying. :sneaky:
Of course I'd help to pay something, but probably with about 25-50 additional per year, but not 550. :)
Maybe the question was more about the validity to pay more for the bandwidth or prospect of increasing members. So if it's really the case that the site does reach the upper bounds, an upgrade would certainly be usefull. Otherwise, it'd be a bit superfluous, until the next big contest, or much more content on the site.
Off Topic:
...Perhaps Apple could help us out with funding...
Pigs can fly!
Apple actively helps iDG!
Hell freezes over!

Bandwidth is not a problem for the most part except during contests. The ceiling of late has come from lack of RAM that the forum / CMS, etc uses.
>That or hit Apple for the ok to run iDevgames off
Although we are all doing something to help the platform, ie Apple, I've never put much stock into Apple recognizing that fact and doing something. Richard H was very helpful when he was at Apple, but beyond that, I feel independence is kinda nice.
Anyhow, I'm very happy with the hosting company. But those occassional downtimes always leads me to yearn for a bit more RAM and server chunk.

Hi everyone, I've also become a lurker. A part of my creativity still drives to want to be creative making games, but it seems that a combination of time and direct attention to a project is hard for me to grasp lately. I've attempted to be part of 3 projects since El Ballo and I've had to regretfully step away from each for various reasons. The last thing I want to do is keep setting expectations for people that I'd be part of a project with and then not deliver.
From this I've decided to take a step back from game development and simply focus on further developing my good old fashioned drawing skills. It's my first love after all :P
I am excited about the iDevGames 2007 though. Looking forward to learning more about it.

My impression is that while iDG isn't as vital as it used to be, it has matured a lot. We're making better and better stuff, and the Inkubator project actually seems to be going somewhere. My economy will be taking off at the end of October when a convergence of summer job payments will come, so donating will be within my reach again, yay.

A little too late. I accepted my host's offer of given us a discount from $44.50 to $40.50 each month. (Every bit helps.) I'll work hard to get things online. Increase traffic. And then in a year, I'll see if they offer that super deal again.
Cheers

It might be useful to figure out what users want out of the site nowadays- I suppose either it has changed from the hey-day or else it was something like uDevGames driving a lot of the traffic.

Personally, I discovered idg because of one of the udg contests. I remember going to idevgames.com and thinking "cool, look at all these clever games". I downloaded them all, had great fun, and now here I am developing games (sort of).
I really think udg drives a lot of good traffic towards the site. We should have another one :D
