View Full Version : Network problem about to drive me mad...

Okay, I'm just about to go insane here; for the past 24+ hours I've been unable to determine the cause of a network problem which means that the web-sites I have hosted by WBWS are visible to everybody... except me.

I can't access the sites in any way, from ping on up.

This is the situation; I have a multi-domain hosting account with WBWS, on whose (I believe) YellowDNS.com server I have hosted my own sealfin.com and a couple of sites belonging to other people; since yesterday morning, I have been unable to access any site I have hosted on YellowDNS.com from my home network; after a long wait, I just receive a time-out.

At first I thought that the server was simply not responding to any queries from anybody and was dead to the world, but I found that I am able to access any site on YellowDNS.com from a different location with the same ISP, from a different location with a different ISP, or from my home with a free web-proxy site (Anonymouse.org).

I thought that the problem might lie with my firewall or router, but after disconnecting both I have found I experience exactly the same behaviour from YellowDNS.com.

I thought the problem might lie with my network settings, but I've now tried to connect from three machines with both OS X and OS 9 on my home network; with all of these I have found I experience exactly the same behaviour from YellowDNS.com.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to what could be the cause of this problem? WBWS apparently can't find anything amiss at their end...

Edit: And now the mysterious problem has just as mysteriously resolved itself

I had a similar problem, and it was a miss match between my host's and my provider's DNS server. I wrote my host about it, and it was fixed quickly.

Or they just blocked you, for unknown reason (most likely a misunderstanding).

@Bjoernke: thanks for the suggestion, but if the issue was caused by a DNS mismatch, surely I shouldn't be able to connect to the sites from a different location but with the same ISP?

I took experienced the same kind of problem. It turned out my router had decided to add the hosting company's IP addresses to its blacklist. It must have thought that all the traffic coming from it was some kind of attack.

The same thing happened when I was doing a lot of VPN access to my office.

In the end a brought a new router and it has all been fine now (well except for the MacBook wireless drop out issue Apple released with 10.4.10).

@BeyondCloister: if only the problem were that easy to determine the cause of :\ As I stated in the first post, I suspected my router or firewall might be to blame, and disconnected them both, to find I experienced exactly the same problem as with them connected...
