Since my exams end on Tuesday, I thought I'd compile what I have now, post it here, ask for suggestions and implement them when I re-start on this, anyways, what do you think of it?
download it here (http://www.evula.org/solarsystem/Files/blahblah.sit)

window to small
has spinning cursor syndrome. was very unresponsive. Perhaps more understandable keys.
simplistic graphics, but that is okay until you get a decent game behind all of it.
akward battle engine
perhaps you can add more variables to it.
work on it more so it is a tad more playable and then perahps youc an receieve betetr feedback, but most importantly, get rid of the spinning cursor

'When your back is against the wall the only thing to do is to turn around and fight' - John Major
turn around and fight the wall?
...or maybe, turn all the way around; and do the hokey pokey?
Regarding the game, I couldn't quite figure out how to do anything. A start up screen with instructions might help (even if temporary).

a to move left
d to move right
s to move down
w to move up.
And the spinning cursor only appears in OSX. It was designed for OS9 so there will probably be a few bugs.

Did you by any chance model part of the game off of the Yipe games?

"Did you by any chance model part of the game off of the Yipe games?"
It is a lot like Yipe!. (almost exactly the same thing)
It's still a good start, I would't worry about graphics too much. I would focus more on adding something in that seperates its gameplay from the Yipe! games. (realtime RPG?:D ...ok maybe not...of course making the main guy actually attack like FF1 or something would be cool)
Other then that, great start.

That is a great start. Is that using my tutorial code. If it is then I never would have believed it possiable. It does look a lot loke Yipe I. If you made the player and the enemy show up above the battle options it would be better.

I don't think I could make the main guy/blob attack like in ff1 because I wouldn't have a clue how to, and I don't even know what ff1 characters attacked like.
I've added in a couple more screens (and made a sub-boss), and I'll try and make the enemies show up on the battle screen.
And I won't/can't change it so it doesn't look so much like Yipe!, becuase I really like those games, and if it aint broke, don't fix it :p
Seriously, I'd like to, but I don't think my programming skill are up to adding anything special

Yup, I did use your tutorial as a template, and it's quite a good tutorial as well
thanks.

You and I are the same age, darkgold is a year older and I think Quicksilver is a year older to. Is there a certian age of Metal users? The more you program the more you learn. I have been seriosly programming for 1.5 years. I hoped to help new users by writing a guide. I remember learning with no guides just the Metal Help. It took 1 year(1999-2000) for me to figure it out. Then I found out about metal v.1.73 then I found out about the Glacial.com forum. Now I have a software company and a .com. Not to mention not getting last place in the udev games. You know Marin started developing Metal at 14?

The lack of a begginers tutorial really does get annoying, I almost gave up on metal because of that. I suppose the forums helped a lot.
And I thought you were 15?

Hrm, making a picture of the enemy appear in the battle screen wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Anyways, here's a screenshot:

Hrmm...when I was that age I was using HyperCard. Luckly it was still being supported by Apple at the time ( version 2.3 had just come out, I think? ).
Keep up the good work, the more you do the more you'll learn. :)

I now have a software company, www.staroneSW.com. I have been programming ever since I got my PM 7600 (before I had a mac classic :D ).

I'm 21 right now and I'll be 22 come March. I'm in the best year of my life right now, so I'm not worried about the younger crowd. :)
In my opinion, learning programming in high school was one of the best things I ever did, and you guys will see that too if you go to college in a programming-related field. When I was in my freshman year, I was constantly helping out my friends who hadn't had any prior experience and was deemed the 'Java-god' by them even though I had never used Java before college ( It was all C/C++ ).
Have fun and make sure to finish the game. It's _far_ too easy to get off track and not work on it for extended periods of time. :p

Too true, I was meant to have finished a quiz on the Solar System a month ago (then I finally figured out how to use the sprite system in METAL and I haven't looked back since :p ).
I'm probably now 2/3 of the way through (it's a small game), and have added some extra features
