Entering gaming industry

Hi,

I'm currently studying game design course at university and would be grateful if someone can help me out of what kind experience is need to enter gaming industry and any software packages that are particularly used to creating levels and characters. The kind of jobs I am looking for is either Level design or sound effect for games.
