I hope this is the right place to post this.
I'd like to announce a new crossplatform, massively multiplayer game has been conceived, called OpenEV. Its goal is to duplicate the gameplay of Ambrosia Software's (http://AmbrosiaSW.com/) Escape Velocity series while adding exciting new elements, most notably massively multiplayer play in a persistent universe. The project is about one month old now, and we're still working out some initial planning and starting to actually write the server code. Any and all help is welcome. If you want to join the project, offer coding tips, or just give out some game ideas, please visit our website (http://openevgalaxy.sourceforge.net/), our sourceforge page (http://sourceforge.net/projects/openevgalaxy/) (not much there yet), or go directly to our forum (http://darktemplar.sourcecod.com/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=25) . We hope to see some of you there!

Regretably, "Crater Creator" is fitting. I'm sorry to be so pessimistic, but may whatever gods there are have mercy on the lead designer's soul.

I lost count of the number of times that people wanted this done on the original EV and EVO forums. Ambrosia wasn't going to do it, the plugin community didn't know how to do it, and Matt wasn't going to do it.

"Hmm, I wonder how I could get SGI and Ambrosia to sue me simultaneously? I know!"

IMHO, if completed, OpenEV would be an awesome achievement and I wish to wish you all the very best of luck in implementing it.

Go for it. But I must state in advance that "Vega-Strike" is an open source project already covering most of what you are trying to do. It would be in the best interest of all interested to simply help that project become multiplayer.

Vega-strike can be found at source forge.

if you would like to take a glimpse at Multiplayer persistant
space gaming in progress on the pro field check out Vendetta.

Thanks, griffin. Actually, the maker of Vega Strike has already contacted us and is willing to share code back and forth. And several of us have seen Vendetta. While the developers over there aren't looking for another project, we're borrowing some ideas from it. kberg, maker of an impressive "EVMP" game, is also with us. Don't let this discourage you from pointing out other similar games, though.

Ya. I dropped by your site and saw his post.
Also saw the good news that Parsec code will be available in
May. That sure is a pretty game, too bad they ran out of free
time to get it going farther.

Have you seen Celestia?
its not a game bot a cosmos simulator that is GPL'ed.
I'm not sure where you could take it, but its really cool.

As far as games go Galactica is unlike any space game I ever played.

I try to conceive of a way to make Galactica meet EVNova and Vendetta
all at once...and its not easy. But there must be a way.
If you haven't played a full game of Galactica I suggest losing a weekend
to it!

Hey, great. We know about Parsec, but can you post some more info on Celestia and Galactica (ie, website)?

Ah... galactica. I remember playing that game when it was called galactic empire. I thought it was always too easy though. I just set my homeworld to max technology, then set every other world to max production after maxing the population. Then sent a single ship to spread the tech. games never took more than an hour.
