Image Format Specifications

Where can I find info on most image formats? I'm programming this in MetaL and I need to know how to create JPEGs, TIFFs, etc. without the use of QuickTime.

Please only list image formats with open licenses (e.g. not GIF)

We need a rating under each users avatar called "Lazy level:" Works like this, someone posts a question that is already in the FAQ, first user to spot the lazy post, can add a point to that poster's lazy level. Kind of public humiliation level. Would be lots of fun I think, and I am eager to know who is the laziest person here. (Reminds me of that Deputy Dog show on the lazy contest. :D )
