Rome, ITALYóJuly 26, 2003óThe world goes on turning, unaware that in a tiny research laboratory, a cracked test-tube may lead to the destruction of humanity.

As the leaked contents of a hazardous experiment start killer microbes on a multiplying frenzy, humankindís only hope of avoiding mass plague is a lone lab assistant who must be quick enough to neutralize and destroy the micro-organisms by observing and manipulating their natural chemical instabilities.

Welcome to the crafty puzzler Germs, the latest creation from developer Mike Weyandt and Factor Software. Germs is a game that combines quick thinking with even quicker reflexes as players manipulate scads of colorful, killer pathogens in order to neutralize a biologial threat and save humanity. It can be found here:

The gameplay is quite simple, relying at its core on the "pick pieces up and place them on the gameboard" model used in several games such as MacPipes.
In Germs, the player picks up germ sprites from a "culture dish" and arranges them on the gameboard in patterns of the same color to make them disappear.

As the player advances through the levels, the patterns become more complex, the germs become more plentiful, and the danger skyrockets through the roof. But a savvy hand can seize advantageous powerups and spare seconds to create killer combos that keep the threat at bay for the next few secondsóand also rack up a heckuva lotta points.

Will your wits be quick enough to stop an outbreak? Anyone running Mac OS 9 or X is invited to find out.

I haven't tried the game, and although the gameplay doesn't sound like it, the storyline resembles Microbian.

Yeah, except he's got better graphics and a higher framerate. I'm going to have to put Microbian off until METAL 2.0 comes out cause of the framerate.

Sure, you can post it to news.

It indeed seems a bit like Microbian. Cute graphics.

Cheers

What type of FPS are you getting, it seamed fine on my comp last build.

A lot of lower end machines have trouble with it, but my newest experiment just killed its speed pretty good.

I added walls to the game. I used a pythagorean formula w/ position check sort of collision detection (which isn't as efficient as a matrix). When placing about 50 of them to make a little pattern in level six, it whacked the frame rate down to 31 FPS on my G3 733. Not cool. So, I'll tinker with it and everything until its works all right, but I'll have to wait for 2.0, or port it to a faster BASIC. Don't exactly have the cash for a higher-end basic, but I'll be getting a job soon. Here I go again.
In other news, I'll be looking for an artist as soon as a resolution to my framerate problem surfaces.
