Here is a song (unfinished) I wrote for Hooptie. It is unfinished, and it trails off. (It isn't completed.) I'm kind of disappointed about how QuickTime Instruments make it sound. It sounds a lot different on my synthesizer. I was thinking about trying to make some custom instruments, but they take up space... right now the file size is only about 18k.

There is an update to the midi song uploaded to my itools site. It is under the same file name.
http://homepage.mac.com/jczeck/Hooptie_Battle.midi
This one is completed unless I can think of how to improve it. It is 2:08 long and loops well. (It's meant to loop.) I was thinking it would work as a song for in game for a level.
Were you thinking of having a bunch of songs: one for every level or just one for the "game" state?
Here are some ideas for possible "game" states that there could be different songs that play.
Title screen
In game (Hooptie_Battle.midi?)
Game Over
In between level
Bonus screen
View high scores (something regal)
Other game states could be filled in with sound effects (or possibly little midi songs)
Some other game state that is planned that I missed?
I (finally) got OS X to run on my computer. Apparently the hard drive that shipped with my mac doesn't work with OS X... go figure. I played around with Hooptie for a while but it is hard when my computer is so slow in OS X. It isn't just Hooptie, my game gets 3-4 frames/sec when I normally get 200-300 under OS 9!

I know I haven't spent much time on the music of the project, but I just wanted to say I think this song sounds great. I also think Archenar's game over song is fantastic.
You can download every single song we've had submitted so far from our website:
http://inkubator.idevgames.com/music/index.html
I think I should also add our two musical contributors to the credits but I'll need to get your name first Jon.
Thanks for your support guys,
Mark.
(Jon's song has now been updated. Good work :-))

The official game music states are as follows (for now):
kSplashScreenMusic
kPlayingMusic
kOpeningScreenMusic
kGameOverMusic
kOutOfTimeMusic
kTimeBonusMusic
kYouWinMusic
There will most likely be multiple instances of kPlayingMusic I.e.: kPlayingMusicA, kPlayingMusicB, etc.
I'm thinking we could use one song per level on a long loop (songs 1 to 5 for the first five levels then back to 1 at the sixth level).
But we can also use dynamic music for when special occasions occur: getting a new life after collecting enough letters, being down to one penguin, etc.
The list above is what we need music for right away, the rest can be worked out at a later time.
Achenar's Game Over song currently fills the kGameOverMusic slot. Aarku's song will probably end up as one of the kPlayingMusic slots. (Aarku: Good work btw!)
I would appreciate it if the people doing music would include some sort of reference to themselves in the QT movie properties or at least the Get Info comments to know who did what music.

This is a really short piece I know but I designed it so you could possibly do that dynamic music stuff. There are 8 tracks in this midi, including one melody track. So by default they all play at once.
If you don't want the dynamic music stuff, I could compile a longer looped midi that has different tracks enabled at different times.
One thing that is screwed up in this song (and Hooptie_Battle.midi) are the drums. The titles song is just supposed to have a simple snare drum with a couple of drum rolls, but QT musical instruments makes it a wierd click with some sort of dj-scratch... wierd. It kind of sounds like penguin barfing.
The battle music is just supposed to have a bass drum/high-hat type boom-chick rhythm but as far as I can tell all of QT's drum kits are screwed up. If someone knows how to fix it, please do.

I've fixed the drums in your Hooptie titles file. The problem was that they were set to be played with the side kick and the dj scratch from QT drums.
Here's the corrected file:

Get a program called MIDIGraphy from www.harmony-central.com . You can fix the drums with it. The drums are in instrument # 10. I solved the problem by moving upwards the drum line.

Jon, I really like your Battle and Titles tracks, and I agree that the Game Over sound effect is very good. I liked "powerup" too :-) And "theme" wasn't bad.
I know I haven't been around. I'd like to be contributing much more, but I'm bogged down with other projects and RL stuff. On the plus side, I just got DSL at home, so now I can spend less time waiting for the internet and more time being productive while at home.

That's cool. We all have times when we need to focus more on other things. But I'm really looking forward to having a new sprite on the game board :-)
Cheers,
Mark.

Jon,
What name would you like to be displayed in the credits, most people use their full name but shorter names are acceptable?
