Ok, I'm nearing completion of another fine Flamin' Ghost Software product - MediaManager. I've come to the point where I think I've gotten (most of) the bugs and it's usable. I'm looking for comments on the interface, functionality, and of course any other improvements in general. What does it do? It takes a folder full of files and displays them in a list. It makes it easy to open and rename the files via a flexible plug-in structure. I think it should work on any OS from 10.2 up, but I could be wrong. It currently supports most any video file format you can throw at it (except the AVI ones for which the codecs are PC only), as well as many picture formats. Give it a whirl! I'm thinking of eventually releasing it as $15 shareware, but anybody who gives me valuable feedback will get it at half price. Thanks!

Oh, by the way, drag a folder into the main window to add its contents to the list.

Uhm it doesn't do anything.
I mean it lists files but we all have a finder for that, there's no preview or viewing of the content.
Children should be called "items" just like the finder.
Total number of items should be listed.
If you expect money for this there has to preview and search functions. Multi-rename functions would also be useful.
It should at least be somewhat like iPhoto or Project Builder: Previews, editing files, double-clicking files opens the file in the right app, etc.
On a heavy folder (160 megs, 600 items or so) it beach balls for like 4 minutes, while project builder lists the entire content (and allows preview/editing) in under a minute.
It also lacks the ability to move, group, delete, or merge files.
You might want to check out the Shareware, diskCatalog Maker for a good example of Media "memory"
Portfolio and Cumulus are two excellent asset management software tha run some bucks.
And of course iPhoto is free.

Did you download all the plugins? Currently it only supports video and audio files. What kind of files are in that folder?

Search sounds good. Preview would be very difficult for videos and such. How would the multi-rename work? Would the user specify regex's or what? Double clicking on the file in any column other than the name opens it in the proper application, assuming that it knows about the file type. Moving is supported, although it is not very user-friendly. If you type a partial path as the name, for example change "mymovie.mov" to "../mymovie.mov" it will move it as the path says. How would merging work? You mean take the contents of one movie and place them at the end of another?

Doesn't seem like it should be so hard.

Tried it with movie and image files, none of them opened.
It should at least know what text files are.

Why not ask for a path?

Yeah something like that, or take a batch of images and produce a movie.
Think the app needs contextual menus for options.
Clicking in the other columns doesn't seem very intuitive, especially when the results don't happen.
