what kind of map editor will this be? Just to place tiles? Or will you be placing other things too like arbitrary data? How about YOU describe what you want this "map editor" to do. maybe it will help you design it.

there is a neat 2d sprite library called SpriteWorld - its completely free - at http://www.spriteworld.org/ And there is a level editor built with it called Level Creator http://www.swarming.net/levelcreator/downloads.php Even if you dont use SpriteWorld for your game - you could still use the LevelCreator app and then just import the level files. Its opensource so you can figure out the format pretty easy.

the map editor will be for placing tiles, units, buildings, resource, changing player settings, ect...its going to be a pretty big task, but seeing as the storyline is strong and we have three races ( Humans, Cerians and the Nˆrsk ) it should make for an outstanding game :)
