View Full Version : Torque Demo Problems
Whenever I try to run either example program in the Torque Demo it closes and gives me one of those messages asking to send a log of the error to Apple. Anybody else have this problem and maybe know of a fix?

I have the same problem, not sure why. It doesn't exactly fill with me with enough confidence to spend 100bucks on a program that i can't run a demo for, it does look good though, i am wondering if anyone here has it and how steep the learning curve is.

how steep the learning curve is.
last I heard: from x to 0 - 365 (x being days you spend working with it), and y being the % of torque you know, f(x) is best represented by f(x)=1-2^(-x/100)

Torque on the Mac is notoriously buggy. It often takes several months to get even major bugs fixed, and many bugs *never* get fixed. It's HUGE with like a half million lines or more of cryptic C++ code comprising thousands of methods and functions.
The learning curve is rather steep I'm afraid. It's NOT for beginners, especially on the Mac. Most importantly, if you don't have a PC available to develop content with, then you might as well forget it. I wish they would state that more clearly on their site. That being said, Torque is very powerful, and if you're dead-set on learning everything you possibly can about game programming then it might be worth the purchase. Just don't expect to have much success with it right away. You have to learn all of its quirks and nuances to start getting anything working right. You have to spend a considerable amount of time learning the Torque scripting language and how it's implemented (and don't forget that you won't be able to use that scripting language anywhere else). There are lots of tutorials but you often have to do a lot of digging to find what you're looking for.

That's a bit disapointing, but also what i kind of suspected. I think dim3 is my best bet at the moment, although unity looks quite promising.

I actually bought it a while back and it's only since the 1_3_0 release and XCode 1.5 that I was able to get it even to successfully compile, despite repeated tries and the support of Mark F at Garage.
Of course, you do need a PC to create content as has been mentioned and the F-key thing on a laptop sucks, but what can you do? I've pretty much given up on it.
I too am looking forward to trying out Unity (hopefully there's a demo) although at the price point they've set, there are alot of us tech junkies/hobbyists who'll have to skip Unity to instead put food on the table for our family (especially after you convert the Unity pricing that's being suggested into Canadian dollars).
