hi gang,

neat-o project you have going. Would love to contribute with some artwork. I've done a fair share, all sorts of things such as tiles and animated sprites, splash screens and logos, interface elements, web graphics, etc. Let me know if I can be of assistance.

take care

Excellent, it's really great to hear from someone interested in pitching in. Our graphics are actually going pretty well at the moment. Alan (the game's key artist) has been working very hard and the graphics have improved drastically since the 2nd milestone release as a result (I'll get an update out soon).

However we are looking for someone to write a dramatic game introduction for the screen that appears (briefly now but for more time later) after the user starts a new game. Something like "the Earth trembles, a dark ellipse creeps over the horizon, yadah, yadah, yadah." Once we get that done we can then move on to redesign that screen. If you're interested, you're welcome to start a new thread with some ideas for the introduction (it should be brief about a paragraph's length) and then we can all work together to settle on something that we all (or most of us) like. The new paragraph should probably involve penguins and aliens but the rest is up to you.

If that's not your cup of tea, I'll keep an eye out for anything graphics related you could give us a hand with and e-mail you if anything crops up.

Lastly, I should mention one area where we are in desparate need of help and that is in terms of sound. If you have any experience or interest in gathering or composing sound or music, we really need some.

Whatever your choice thanks for your interest in the project,
Mark

Um, I just realised your project is for OS X... I don't have OS X so it might be a problem contributing then :/ Ah well.

The only experience I have with sound for games is from my own little projects. I do however have some experience editing/mixing sound (live recordings and such). And I do have numerous sound effects discs. Can you tell me a little more about what kind of stuff you need, maybe I could send a sample or two...

cheers

Are those sound effect discs stuff you've made yourself?

If you've any effects that could pass as
- a beaming-in robot
- a block of ice being pushed
- a penguin waddling around (good luck)
- a block falling into a pit
- a robot falling into a pit
- a robot moving around

Those are the kinds of sounds Hooptie needs right now (there are more.)
In fact, you could probably take a look at the Game Screens thread to see the characters involved in the game.

Kjurtyl sez:

"Are those sound effect discs stuff you've made yourself?"
--- Yes and no, I have lots of royalty free sampler discs and tons of stuff I've created myself (I've never used any of the royalty free samples without first editing the heck out of it).

--- Will see what I can do/find (later) this week.

--- (Depending on the graphics/sounds) it is very hard to contribute to a project like this when you can't see for yourself how it all fits together. I'm a bit surprised at your statement, tbh...!

arctic Oh, hadn't even thought of that! :D

Jabber, below your name in the field to the left of your above message, it says "Jabber (...) OS 9 programmer". Eh, are you contributing to programming in this project? Must be difficult w/out OSX!

*giggle*

arctic ;) Yeah, that's it. I use my amazing... uh... ability to, um, program using IB and PB w/o OS X... :p but a little more seriously, I wish I could contribute, but yeah, the obvious keeps me from doing so. Though I am watching this project with keen interest. Hopefully I will get OS X in the near future and be able to contribute more than just the occasional off-topic comment :D

ah, I somehow took you for one of the coders...

cheers

Actually, when I started working on Hooptie as a graphics guy, I didn't have OS X at all -- I asked for a description of how the game works, took a look at a couple of the screenshots of how the game looked at the time, asked a few questions and went from there :-) I ended up creating a mock-screen shot photoshop file and dragging around graphics myself to get a feel for how things would look, and that method worked out pretty well. For the sprites, I created a macro to create an animated gif so I would see what they should look like animated.

Granted, it is much EASIER now that I have X, and I certainly am glad to be able to see what I've done in action, but it certainly was possible to work on the project when I was confined to 9. :)

Hehe, Josh is somewhat of a programming prodigy, he codes entire games with Cocoa for OSX to be compiled by others... using only SimpleText in OS 9. Its amazying, really.

My problem is I can't get myself to boot into X in order to do any coding...

Hmm... it just occured to me as I wrote this that we are a rather sarcastic lot, aren't we? Perhaps that is a characteristic imbedded in programmers... (i.e. yeah, i'm sure this will fix that huge bug... *chuckle chuckle*)

Seriously, though, I've been trying to get myself to open the "startup disk" control panel all day... I'm working on my homepage, and I'm just much more comfortable in 9 than X... but I'll do it and implement the click-through-splash-screen code tonight. I promise

I noticed I coined a word in my previous post. Amazying. I like it.

I barely ever use Mac OS 9 now, except for when I need to access a Java app which runs best with Netscape Communicator and for printing (I have a Personal LaserWriter NT which uses the now unsupported PostScript 1).

On another note artic, it would be really great if we could have some sounds for the project. I value sounds above the music because occassionally when I do have the sound on in my games (which is not too frequent) I often have an iTunes backing, so all I want is the sound effects (and I don't want many sound effects at that). So if you do have any sounds effects to contribute artic, we'd/I'd really appreciate it. Plus contributing as a Mac OS 9 user gives you something to look forward to when you make the switch to Mac OS X. [On a sidenote, what Mac hardware do you have?]

As DaFalcon said, he contributed to this project for a number of months without Mac OS 9 (Edit: that should be Mac OS X my fault sorry :D).

You can e-mail me any sound effects you have to quirinus@mac.com (they don't have to be an exact match sometimes I find less than perfect-matching sound effects work in a cooler way).

Hope you decide to contribute,
Mark.

> "As DaFalcon said, he contributed to this project for a number of months without Mac OS 9."

That should read "... without MacOS X." But the point still stands, you can contribute even if you only have OS 9 :)
