View Full Version : OneSadCookie name guessing contest!
lightbringer
2005.04.30, 02:24 AM
In celebration for our love for Keith Bauer (AKA OneSadCookie) I am offering up a new contest to put your best guess towards where you think his famous nickname comes from.
The contest ends two days from the time this post is created and the winner will be selected by Mr. Bauer himself. The goal of this contest is to either come up with the most credible idea or the most interesting, again, Keith will decide upon who is the overall winner with their entry. Each individual can enter as many times as they like.
We've all pondered at one point what it might mean, but now you have the chance to be a part of history in the making!
With those rules in mind, good luck!

Back in the mid-90s when Bauer was an unemployed professional wreslter he found a new opportunity as a birthday clown. One of his acts involved juggling cookies. Over time it just became his signature move, and eventually he was known as the cookie-monster.
On a cold Saturday night at Ms. Kaiti's 13th birthday party Keith appeared slightly off. The previous night he had broken up with his Asian girlfriend and gone drinking till the early morning. With little sleep and a serious hangover Keith ruined the young girls birthday party. All chaos broke loose as he started jamming the cookies down his pants in a disorientated state, the child's mother lashed out at Keith and kicked him off the job site. The next day Keith was again without work.
After finding time to reexplore himself he discovered a quaint group of game developers, often young individuals, interested in purusing their passion of entertainment. Keith, in honor of the kids he'll never forget decided to call himself 'onesadcookie'.

He and his girlfriend were eating store-bought cookies and one of them wasn't made right- it was very small or crushed at the bottom of the bag or something. They both looked at it and one of them said, "wow, that's one sad cookie". This later became a catch-phrase between them when his girlfriend said to Keith (after he got caught in the rain, or came home very tired from work, or whatever) "wow, you're one sad cookie."
Keith then adopted it as his screenname, pleased at the in-joke and that everyone would drive themselves nuts trying to figure out what it meant. Until someone named Matt came along and guessed the whole story. This bugged Keith no end but it was too late- to change his screenname now would be to admit that the mysteriousness of the nickname had been what was important. So he was stuck with it forever. The End.

There is a theory which states that if anyone discovers exactly what the name is for, and why it exists, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarrely inexplicable.
There is another theory which states that this has already happened.
Right, on with the guessing. Nah, Lord of the Rings is on...

Hqve you guys read H2G2?
Nope, but I have read bits & phrases like the one you quoted, and it makes me wonder if Douglas Adams had read Asimov's short story "Jokester" (1956)...
Of course, he did read "The Last Question"
Edit: @snakey's post (below): *SPOILER* "if anyone discovers exactly what the name is for, and why it exists, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarrely inexplicable" is what they discover at the end of "Jokester" :ninja:

Guess 1:
Is it referring to gingerbread men? (I assume you know what I mean :-)).
I imagine something like:
He was young and got given one. He change the smile to be a sad face. And someone said something like: Aww. It's a sad cookie.
Guess 2:
I've seen OneSadBiscuit used by him also. I was thinking that maybe he was dipping biscuits in a hot drink and eating them (weirdo thing that us brits do, possible NZers as well). The biscuit drooped a bit (as though it was sad). And someone said something like: Man, thats one sad cookie.
Guess 3:
People have often "Given people cookies" in IRC channels etc. I was thinking maybe keith said he wasn't happy and someone "Gave him a sad cookie"
Guess 4:
I've heard people say things like: You're one sad cookie if you can't figure out how to... or something along those lines. Maybe someone said that to keith and he adopted the name :-).
Note, All of these guesses are supposed to be "Or something like that" guesses. :-)
I think that 3 and 4 are most likely, 2 is silly and 1 is just a wild guess :-)

Keith and his friends once played a game of dodgeball with cookies (or biscuits) and there were happy and sad cookies. One certain cookie that was most definately sad was thrown at his face. It missed and he ate four flying happy cookies. Everyone else had loads of sad cookies to eat and he only got happy cookies by the end of the day. He was upset and found the cookie that had missed him. He picked it up, found it had been trodden on and he put it on his head. Everyone then referred to him as one sad cookie. Instead of two sad cookies or three etc.

My guess is that he saw my cooking, and thought "wow, that's one sad cookie/biscuit" :)
But really.
My theory is that OneSadCookie is a sign from the virgin huntress herself, Artemis. He is orion reincarnate, an spends his time hunting down ATI cards and shooting them. The name itself is a tribute to the moon. the common belief is that it is made of cheese, but Artemis wanted to fix that rumor. one side is made of cookie, the other biscuit. (cheese was taken my venus). If you tilt your head sideways why it's in first or third quarter, it looks sad. Hence OneSadCookie/Biscuit.

Contrary to most people's beliefs, cookies are different from biscuits and are not just a stupid americanism of the word. Cookies are softer and they are rarely dipped into tea, with a crust that usually can be bent. Biscuits are harder and seem less soft if you get what I mean... For an extreme example, take digestives and take millies cookies variety. If you haven't a clue what I'm on about, then go to http://www.omrlp.com/ and check out their 2005 manifescto on what they will do to little children showing signs of americanism.
Or just completely ignore this post altogether...

Snakey: Scholar is your "post level" here. Keep posting and eventually, you'll be like OSC: Legendary.
Which brings me up to my guess:
In South America, there is the myth of the Viracocha, the legendary civilizers. The legend appears in various forms around the region, but they all have a few traits in common. The Viracocha came from the western sea, by way of a serpent in one way or the other. They taught the natives agriculture, ways to live, to scribe laws, build houses and raise animals. They brought mastery over technology. So, thinking about the origin of the Viracocha: what would you find west of South America? Well, New Zeeland, where Keith hails from.
How does this pertain to his name? Well, first of all, Keith has really pulled the blinds on you here. OneSadCookie is a distortion of his real name. It's not supposed to be "One Sad Cookie", but rather "Once A Cookie". What, you say? Yes, it's true. Once a cookie. "But what about the legend?" Well, the name "Viracocha" may mean "Of seafoam" in the old tongue, but it is a distortion as well. It is correctly transcribed as "Were A Cookie".
Makes sense, doesn't it?
"Once a cookie".
"Were a cookie".
The civilizer from the Pacific, who came to America to teach mastery over technology.
Does that sound plausible? Well, add in the fact that "Bauer" - Keith's family name - means "farmer" in German.
EDIT: Farmer, not builder.

Cookies are sad beings. Imagine a cookies life....
We'll take a chocolate chip cookie for example:
What was previously disemboweled in the creation of the earth is brought back together after the painful split, Flour, Sugar, Brown Sugar, Pure Vanilla, Baking Soda, Eggs, Butter, Salt and Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips for an even more painful reunion. Its like siamese nonuplets (9 joined together* (http://planetmath.org/encyclopedia/Septuplet.html) ) breaking up, and then being forced back together. But this group of ingredients aren't just put together, oh no, they are whisked, beaten, heated, split up again into circular form. They are put into jars, airtight mind you. In these jars they remain until taken out to be devoured by the beasts that put them together in the first place. Thus cookies are sad by nature. I herby propose that OneSadCookie is one of the many sufferers in some stage of this malicious cycle.

Here's a new suggestion for the origin of the nickname OneSadCookie.
Background: last week I was searching for the website where I had a vague recollection you could sign up for a free registration code for the game Galactic Patrol. Google quickly located it for me:
http://www.vendornation.com/WS4D_Cookie=x5.11.05_21,04,04_57685/community_gp/
Now check out that URL, see if you notice anything interesting.
(As followup, I searched the web for 1S4D_Cookie, IS4D_Cookie and other variants, didn't find anything. But if you search for ws4d_cookie you will get hits in the URLs of many, completely unrelated webpages. So apparently that URL is generated by some standard tool or technique that lots of websites are using; not sure what it is though.)
Just musing. Granted, it's a bit of a leap to get from WS4D_Cookie to One Sad Cookie, but who knows, maybe alcohol was involved somehow. :-)

Hey, if you're bored, I can always unload my programming questions on you. :p
My guess is, he was innocently downloading smiley faces off the internet one day. Months later, he decided to clean out the little spinning magnetic thingy that is his hard drive. When he got to his "Cookies" folder, he noticed that the website had placed a cookie on his hard drive in the form of a sad face image. He was moved to tears,(and rather inspired) by the hardship this smiley must have gone through to have such a sad face, but he did what was necessary and deleted it. However, he could not sleep that night, and decided he must carry on that smiley faces legacy. Thus, he came to forums and registered himself as OneSadCookie.
