Hi Guys
Unity beta 6 is available for your beta testing your game-development
pleasure. As we're nearing release, we want you to break it as much as possible.
Get it from:
http://www.otee.dk/unity/unity_beta.dmg
For those who don't know about it yet. We have a forum at
http://www.otee.dk/forum
It's a good place to hang out and discuss unity with the other beta testers
and us. Suggest new features or just ask questions.
You can now upload pictures as well so it's very easy to showcase your
latest unity creation. Also unity now includes a web player so it should be
fairly easy to show your latest creation live in a web browser on the forum.

Caution Folks
The reason this comes in a .mpkg is so that it can install a kernel extension and a daemon process. I don't know what they do -- seems to be something to do with anti-piracy measures, but I'd rather not have them on my system, thanks all the same.
To the developers -- a note about why you're screwing up my system before you ask for my admin password would be nice.

We install the kernel extension as a part of our licensing scheme. This is the same system being used by Pro Logic, so its well tested.
That being said, we should probably say _why_ we're doing this.
Unity will be released at WWDC.

Once again, how do I get a liscense? I NEED this. This is one of the best 3D engines ever! (right behind Dim3 in my opinion...still waiting for an r8 link...)

Unity will be released at WWDC.
...and the Mac changes forever.
Best of luck with this.
Could be Apple Design Contest Winner.

ok this is just a rumor, don't know if its true, so don't go telling everyone about it, or where you heard it from, but, launch unity, see those guys that come up in the dialogue?
Those guys come to your house in hooded robes and say "You have been chosen" and do all kinds of ninja magic physics and then you enter a serial number and the software works.
just something i overheard, take it with a grain of salt

Actually I can attest that's pretty accurate. ;-)
Anyways, OTEE was one of the uDevGames 2004 sponsers with three Indie licenses (one of which I had the pleasure to receive) and one Pro license, so I've been tinkering since beta 2. I've found myself thinking of game ideas that would be easy with Unity that I would never have dreamed of before, not to mention graphical possibilities. It's really good stuff, take a look.

In your wise opinion, what do you think sets Dim3 apart from Unity?

@aarku: I suppose he places Unity behind Dim3 as the latter is free...
I'll have to look into this when I've got a Mac capable of running the editor at slightly more than 5fps; the physics demo is cute though; slow, but still cute.

The part that it's free, as compatible as Unity (almost...) and is in an easier language...it's just my opinion...I'll probably use Unity to mess around with light stuff...so, how do you get a liscense?

Umm, wouldn't you use dim3 as a quick way to mess around with light stuff if it is easier and then use Unity for the more important stuff you may release later? Dim3 is all very well as such but many things seem to constrain it, such as the poor moving around system in the demo(can put off many potential users) and the fact that you can't look around 360° so aiming a rocket launcher up is a problem...
I'm wondering whether not I should make and release a demo with better explosion particle effects with models that look more of a halo likeness to them to convince other people that it is viable...
I will try unity as soon as I get on to the emac, and be sure I will post how awsome it is. ;)

Naturally, we'll be talking about Unity at WWDC thanks to the kind guys at apple - we're speakers at WWDC in the following sessions:
* Game Engines for Mac OS X—Friday, June 10
* Make Your Own Games: Over the Edge Entertainment, GarageGames, and Linden Lab—Friday, June 10
The kind guys even gave us speaker passes - so now we get to feel all important and even get in for free (YAY!)
Drop by!

I can't install the beta. Perhaps it has something to do with me still having 10.2.8?
EDIT: Looks like InterLokExtensions.pkg is the one that refuses to install :(

Man I wish I had enough money to get to america, let alone WWDC...
How long have you been developing this game engine for? Is their any other game engines in the talk apart from dim 3, torque and unity? How did you get to speak their, did you pay money to get a stand, or did apple invite you their, with you financing a stand? Do you have a stand? ;) Am I asking too much questions?

What hardware are you on? It'd be good to know to help guage how much complexity I can use. Did Gooball run decently on that Mac?

but what about the price point, licensing?
jamie
2005.06.02, 09:16 AM
I had inquired about that point in an email, here is what I got back:
"There will be an indie version for 399$ and a pro version for 1900$.
For the first few month we will have a early adapter though.
So the indie version will cost 249$ and the pro version 900$.
The pro version allows you to use render to texture and our high speed asset
server solution. The pro version gives you rights to publish anything
commercially. The indie version has some restrictions on what you can
publish commercially."

Erm, I just installed Unity, and I think the installer totally mucked with the permissions on my /Applications/ directory.
e.g.
drwxrwxr-x 75 506 506 2550 3 Jun 01:52 Applications
Who is this user 506, and why does he own /Applications/?
socksy
2005.06.03, 06:20 AM
Ahhh!!! Unity is just some big virus controlling the computer from a distance on the network! Nooo!
Do you mean there is a user with an applications folder created? I don't seem to have a problem with the ownership of the application, still owned by the system apparently - but tiger has changed the get info box so maybe it diferent...

Are Unity and the compiled apps fast?
aarku
2005.06.07, 08:09 PM
Yes, all your scripts are compiled into bytecode through Mono. Mono is really fast. Unity seems to scale really well... going from top end to even a Rage 128 on 10.2.8.
