View Full Version : 4 Hour Mini Games Contest... Reloaded :-)

I enjoyed yesterday's mini games contest so much that I'm gonna try and do another one tonight. It seems that a few people who would have liked to take part couldn't because they didn't know about it. Hence, I am announcing it here.
And I've got (what I think is) a good theme! The game must include Water as a main game element.
I plan for the contest to start 11:00 British Standard Time. Or 6:00 EST. (That's in about 2 hours 20 minutes from when this was posted).
Please post here if you plan on entering or if you need the time moved slightly later or earlier.
You should also go to IRC a bit before it starts as well incase there are any last minute changes.
Thanks!

My fingers are still too blistered from the last one. ;-)

You should do one tomorrow night. I'll actually be able to do it (but only at like 8pm EST). These seem so fun. I wish I had more free time to do them.

Erm, Well. It seems less likely that people would be available on a Friday night.

Shame this did not start a couple of hours ago when there was actually time to do it :(
If someone decides to run a 4 hour contest during normal waking hours in the UK then I maybe interested.

Same, others take over the emac at this time. I'm left on a G3 so I'm planning to quickly have a text based version, and release at 11:30. Or something.
Expect:

>die
you have just splooshed yourself to the ultimate fate to splashing heaven
or not...
>fly
this is a water game dumbass
>kasploosh

I'm pulling out. As I said earlier, I started late. On top of that, I just now gathered all my old resources and got them working. It is just plain impossible to finish in an hour and a half at this point. I have not even started on any game-specific code.

Why don't you guys make it a tradition like "Monday Night Football"?
i.e. "Wednesday 4 Hours", W4H

Good idea, but seperate the UK one will you? It's two in the morning here.
My entry did not get finished, misses a few main features such as input and anything to do so I provide it here only for purposes that people can have a look at it and change it to their needs later. Written in lua via PlayKode;

I've given up as well. Pah. Someone warn me next time that water is f***ing hard to do...
I thought up a few possible theme ideas for the next one though:
- Gravity
- Symmetry
- Racing
- Programming (As in, a game that involves programming :-))
- Grids (As in, it must use a grid or grids as the main game element)

Unlike you unfinishing need-sleep gotta-get-up-for-work types, I actually made something :)

Walaga wins for me, but H to O was a clever pun. :) I got a chuckle out of it. Walaga has a weird bug where the bubbles compete for the text at the beginning and it sort of randomly switches back and forth between them for me. Once I started playing it went away, though.

Actually I submitted H to O as a fully playable game at the 2 hour mark so I did not actually drop out, I just got got done much quicker ;)

Starting from next friday, we could have a competition from around 9:30 to around 11:30, GMT +1. I don't like being up early hours to do a contest, that would be the last day of work/school for people where they can take a break from all the work for four hours. I would have it as earlier but then we'd miss have I got news for you ;) . Then not so many people would drop out hopefully, and it would let us UK people have a fair chance...

I went to sleep before I posted here. So here is the link I only posted in irc: http://will.thimbleby.net/downloads/WaterWindow.zip
For some reason you have to run it from Xcode, I couldn't get it to compile for deployment for some reason. You'll need a fast computer and it helps to have few windows on your screen.

Obviously not a very memorable game if you had forgotten about it so quickly

Well I fixed that compile bug now. Obvious now but at 3 in the morning beyond my capabilities.
I've updated the download (http://will.thimbleby.net/downloads/WaterWindow.zip) and I've changed the colour of the water to a putrid green so that it shows up better against the desktop. It's faster and you can now alter the parameters of the smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulation as well.

I dig WaterWindow. I guess it's sort of a sim-game, eh? :) My favorite thing to do with it is create a pit using three windows and let it fill up like a pool. Then you can spring a leak or push the bottom up an watch it spill over. Nice.

Making complex waterfalls is fun, too. I made a new version of the water sprite. See if you like it:

Hey, cheers. Thats a cool sprite, and it looks even more disturbing when you alter some of the sim parameters. Here's some I'm using and it looks scarily alive. (h=8,ยต=0.28,rho0=2.8) :)
