Hello,

I thinking port our windows game on mac.
But before i start talk about this with director, i would like to see some game sales charts. There is damn alot of charts arround but for PC and consoles but not for mac charts :(
I know that average mac game sell about 5-10k in retail but i'd like to see more information.

I looking for total sold for average (25$) games if possible.
Anyone can share? Or saw somewhere online?

Thanks in advance,
Alexey

googling "mac game sales" (http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=%22mac+games+sales%22&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8) turned up this page with apparently top 30 game sales on mac (http://www.macgold.co.uk/magazine/charts/)

According to MacAddict (http://64.233.187.104/search?q=cache:d1StA3tqNrUJ:www.macaddict.com/magazine/contact/mediakit.pdf+%22mac+games+sales%22&hl=en&client=safari) there is a die-hard mac gaming community of 183,000, who purchase an average of 9 games per year, bringing the Mac game publishers an income of $65.8 Million.

Aspyr controls 60% of the mac gaming market, so everyone else gets to grab
at about $26.32 Million.

Hope that helps to some degree.

I saw that top 30 that - not much information.
There is no units sold information.

Yep. It seems units sold must be so embarassing in comparison to the average Game Boy Advanced game that nobody wants to release the information.

Put it this way:
No Mac port = No Mac sales
Mac port = some Mac sales.

Really? Could you share a link or two with sales charts? I'd like to see the Windows sales, since I'm on the other side of the fence.

Here's an existing thread that will answer your questions - it is as comprehensive a sales chart as I've seen for Mac shareware sales.

You might want to contact Richard at Apple. He is their games marketing liason. He might be able to provide you with fodder for your boss. I'm also sure that the good devs here can tell you that with the right tools/APIs, etc, that supporting the Mac shouldn't bankrupt your company, nor will the support, which people tend to say is easier for our platform.

Cheers,

The devs on Indiegamer typically give a sales ratio of 1:1 Mac/Windows sales. Here's a link to one of their Mac sales threads; you can search the forum for more:

These are mostly shareware guys (~$20 games), but their numbers suggest that adding a Mac port will double your sales.

I meant more on retail games, shareware is not interesting for me. Atleast now.
But thanks!

I know that the best selling game on the Mac for a real long time was Marathon 2 which sold about 120,000 units (not including things like the Mac Action Sack, Marathon Trilogy boxset, etc). But that was back in the 90s, long before the resurgence of the Mac and before huge games like The Sims.

I've never seen any recent numbers for Mac games. The publishers don't release them, and they're almost impossible to track due to a large percentage of Mac games being sold on-line.
