The Beta Project - FlamingHairball - Jul 26, 2011 08:17 PM

Build (Universal): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/680550/IAmTheWind.zip

I will probably only post major updates such as builds in this thread to keep things simple.

There are currently quite a few graphics that are placeholders and quite a few more that I wish were placeholders. I'm going to see about getting a real artist to go through and do some decent graphics.

In particular, I'm hoping to make the wind a bit more… Wind like. Any wind rendering ideas would be very appreciated.

Controls: Click to blow. Click and drag to blow in a specified direction.
If the guy can’t see(i.e has no light), he will walk off edges.

I made it rain! Looking really good. This feels pretty unique!

This is great, and such an original idea! Definitely could use some good artwork to polish it up... eventually, though. You've got time Smile

Embarrassingly, I'm stuck on Level 2...

As far as rendering... I think long lines will convey the wind idea better than dots. Oddly enough, I've always thought of the Office 2010 startup screen on Windows to be very wind-like... almost river like.

What if it looks like a river of air?
Maybe have it start more a point, and then expand out, rather than start at a smaller horizontal line and go to a bigger horizontal line...

Thanks for the kind words.

Re: Level 2 - if that's where you got stuck, you've completed half of the game. Rasp I watched a couple friends play through the first two levels, and it looks as though level 2 has some pretty nasty bugs with the tree(i.e it has a tendency to go crazy, or not catapult like it should). Respawning also appears to be broken.

As for wind rendering - that office video does look pretty cool! Lines are an idea that I've been tossing around - I'm thinking of maybe trying to use Lorenz functions to model some wind lines, but I'll have to see how that goes.

New build up at: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/680550/IAmTheWind.zip

Info is on the blog. There shouldn't be a ton that needs to be explained.

In other news, I'm terrible at platformer puzzle design. I'm going to spend the next two months refactoring code rather than actually adding content.
It may not look nice for the player, but that code is going to be pretty. Smile

No prizes for code quality I'm afraid. :-)

In situations like this I think about if there's a way to turn a weakness into a strength. For example, you could instead make a level editor and invite contributions from one or more people. Or if you are really ambitious, allow players to submit levels for other players to vote on.

Or wait for feedback here on your existing levels, see if you can use that to improve them.

Good luck..

That actually would have been a great idea, if I’d had time to actually work on it at all and actually get a level editor out.

Between other work and school, I had no time to continue this project so I’m (if it wasn’t obvious) out this year. Congrats to all who made it, and best of luck in the voting! I look forward to playing all the entries.

I don't see your game up at http://udevgames.com/entries

are you sure you put up a build and everything?

Bummer, Lincoln. You can still work on it with or without uDG, though Smile
