You could program in Unity3D... It doesn't have to be a 3D game either. Lots of great games that are 2D have been made with Unity. The perk here is that Unity allows you to program once and be able to deploy to many devices (iOS, Android, Wii, PS3, XBox, etc).
Unity3D is free to download. We are using 3.x now. A while back they had a promotion for free iOS and Android licenses so we are keeping this version as long as possible because those keys ($400 USD for iOS and $400 for Android) will not work in Unity 4.
But you can play, see if you like Unity and then pay up right before release.
