I'm not quite sure about IDG trying to be a publisher. I'm concerned that it will require work that iDG isn't necessarily prepared to do. Seems to me it's hard enough to run the contest and website. Tracking royalties could be a bastard. Also, if IDG doesn't promote a particular bundle very well they'd get complaints. Etc.

Granted, the owner of the game would have to do work to associate themselves with iDG, rather than iDG doing it all. But iDG would be promoting and running the contest, and could have a press kit of source materials (graphics, boilerplate text, press release template, etc.) that a developer could draw upon when they create their iTunes game page, title screen, and so on.

That's just my take on the negatives. There are clearly some positives, as you point out.

Measure twice, cut once, curse three or four times.

If the bundles turn out to be wildly successful, then perhaps the publisher path is worth exploring, but I think the bundles get most of the benefits with fewer accounting and responsibility details.
