Hi guys

I have a strange question, because it seems that since a month or so, random sites on the net have started to be very unreliable. my first guess was DNS problems of my provider, but most sites actually do return a name (others don't), when I query them. So most of the time it's "network timeout", other times it's "host not found".

I went to my aunt in america for 2 weeks, and there I had the same problems, some sites would stop to be reachable for half an hour or so, then reappear.

Sometimes friends in europe (per chat) report these sites working for them while they don't for me, some say they don't for them either. I have contacted my provider, and also have some traceroutes, but am myself incapable of interpreting them.

Does anyone have a clue what could be the problem here?

Sites that recently had this problem for me:
http://www.runrev.com
http://www.sluggy.com
http://www.gamasutra.com
http://www.google.com

and unfortunately also:
http://www.idevgames.com

Hm, I can't say I've experienced any unusual amount of trouble that I can't ascribe to my ISP. You might be interested in http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ to test things like that.

One thing that can cause localised problems is Akamai. I don't think Google or idg use them though. But I went through a period where sites would seemingly go down. I checked the activity window, and it was always a static resource on an Akamai server that had timed out. It's a weird problem until you realise it, because it means that big sites go down a lot more frequently than small ones.

That probably isn't the cause of your situation, but maybe in the activity window there's something that'll give you more info to help diagnose the problem. You might even want to try a packet sniffer or something.

Oh, and as I write this runrev.com is down for me.

Yes, in the last few months I've seen all kinds of sites be unavailable for a while, for no particular reason. Google is always available though. I'll see (or not see as it were) major sites like slashdot, reddit, digg, etc. not work for a little while.

That downforeveryoneorjustme site looks interesting. I'll have to try that next time.

BTW runrev is available right now for me. Just goes to show...

Ah, instead of bothering people on chats and forums, I can just use a website... Sooner or later people will start marrying domains. Wow

edit:

Just got this from runrev (I know that all blank label comics where on that server center too):
Quote:The outage began Saturday May 31 at 10:55pm GMT, when electrical equipment at our web host's datacenter shorted out, creating a fire and explosion that knocked out three walls in their electrical equipment room. Fire department officials required all power to the facility to be cut until safety was assured. No one was injured in the incident, and no data was damaged or lost.

As of Monday morning, some locations may be unable to reach the runrev.com domain as updated DNS information propogates throughout the Internet, a situation which will resolve itself in a few hours.

Runtime Revolution utilizes one of the largest and well-regarded hosts in the United States, and thousands of other websites were affected by this outage. We will be working with our web host to establish better redundancy and disaster-management plans in the future.

It's probably just submarines cutting the underwater interenet fiber optic cables. Nothing to worry about!
