How to create a TEXT based MMORPG
Hello. Im like a total noob. Dont know much. So i was wondering how can i start to make my own MMORPG.
oh boy well, for starters, check the sticky!
Text-based MMORPG games are usually called "MUDs" - forgive me if you already know this.
MUDs are usually free to play - you do need either Telnet or a special type of program called a MUD client. I use Cantrip (on Mac) and MUSHClient (on Windows).
Next, go to http://www.topmudsites.com or http://www.mudconnect.com to find a MUD suiting your interests. There's plenty to choose from.
Finally, once you have at least a year or two of experience just PLAYING MUDs (although you may disagree with this time period - it's just my opinion), you should search a forum on one of those two sites for a MUD that is looking for staff. If you know programming, you might want to be a coder. Otherwise, you should go for building (area design) or PR (player relations - quests, etc.).
Please get experience before asking for a staff position - too many people just quit after the owners of a MUD waste time training them. If you become a member of a MUD staff, be SURE you want to stick with it.
Good luck, and happy MUDding!

If you want to join a MUD staff and feel you are qualified, here's two to look at:
* http://celydden.zerofuzz.com
* http://colossus.50webs.com (to connect directly: mudcraft.net, port 10000)
*** Note - Colossus MUD is in a period of downtime at the time of this post.

Oh for gods sake WHY
Try somthing like:
I want to learn the basics of programming what pointer can you give me, instead of this.
Learn Java.
Sir, e^iπ + 1 = 0, hence God exists; reply!
Start small and work your way up. And read this.
I built a proto-MUD over the course of a few weeks with Java. That said, it still taxed the hell out of my knowledge of game development; it was my first experience with multithreaded game development and having multiple idiot users banging on your crap while you're trying to find an unrelated bug.
This was about two years ago, so I figure I'd have been running on about five years of modern game development experience at that point.
You need to start small and work your way up. I recommend starting by learning a language, and then building games with it. In a couple years, after a couple games, maybe you can produce something decent. Until then you'll just burn yourself out.

Newest game: Glow, a sci-fi RPG with lots of zombie bashing. Get it: OS X

Maybe you can join my team to create Exploring Azoundria, a text-based MMORPG. That's probably best to get you the experience you need and you might even stay with us. http://www.xpaz.net/
