What graphic apps do people use for sprite creation?

prerendered sprites look crap? Someone hasn't played enough Diablo 2 yet I think, or perhaps not enough EV Nova? Prerendered sprites look crap only if they are crap, just as hand-pixeled sprites look crap only if they are crap.

Pre-rendered 3d sprites are certainly fast and easy to do, but usually end up looking like crap. Give me a good hand-pixelled sprite any day of the week.

Much as I like the "hand drawn" look, 3d programs are much easier.

It would be cool if someone could make a 3d modeler that, when rendered, looks like pixel art. Like shadowing it with only a few shades and giving a black outline.

Would that be possible?

You mean cel-shading?

If so I could point out a few hundred examples.

I appreciate all 101 of those sites because there are 2D and 3D examples. I'll be sure to put them too good use. Thanks.

Is that really 101 though? Blink

No. You need at least 200 to count as hundreds.

On the subject of hand-drawn vs. 3D-modeled sprites, I recommend looking at Bungie's games.

Minotaur -- hand-drawn
Pathways into Darkness -- hand-drawn
Marathon 1 -- hand-drawn
Marathon 2 -- hand-drawn / 3D-modeled
Marathon ? -- hand-drawn / 3D-modeled
Myth 1, 2 -- hand-drawn / 3D-modeled
Oni, Halo -- no more sprites except for certain special effects

Some of the M1 sprites look like they have some image-editor-generated highlights, and I think I can recognize the M2 and M? 3D-modeled sprites from their more real-looking lighting and shading: the Drone, the S'pht'Kr, the Juggernaut, the SMG, etc.

Pixel art/hand drawn own prerendered sprites, easy.
Someone mentioned Diablo 2, and ok it looks rather good but I'll take Legend of Manas graphics over Diablo 2s anyday.

unless it's for a very small resolution screen (ie GBA or phones) pre-rendered sprites are a lot more practical, and if done right a lot nicer graphically. There's a whole new area of art and skills required to do pre-rendered sprites properly and it usually involves the 3D artist also being a 2D specialist so that he can tidy up the renders by hand when required.

Different 3D packages' renderers seem to suit pre-rendered sprites differently. One of the reasons Adam stuck with Cinema 4D was because the renderer is particularly suited to pre-rendered sprites.
