Help With Universal Game Architecture?

Hello! I was wondering if anyone has tips or examples on how to architect a 2d game for Universal support. Could you have different UIViews for iphone and ipad? I would be using CALayers for the onscreen sprites and they would most likely be instances in the game UIView. However, the game doesn't differ much in the ipad version than from the iphone version, so I would end up recreating the same CALayers as instances in both the ipad view and the iphone view. This would't be a very good way to approach this issue so I was wondering if anyone else had a way of going at this topic. You would also need different images at different resolutions for the old display and the new retina display. How would you approach that? Any input is helpful and some examples would be excellent.
