First Version of TNT Basic XCode Project Available
The CVS version of TNT Basic on sourceforge.net finally compiles as a Universal Binary using XCode.
It’s not finished yet and it basically doesn’t work properly. So don’t think you can do anything useful with it other than peruse the project and try and see how it fits together. I would advise everyone to wait until I’ve finished fixing and testing it before they start trying to do anything with the code.
The README that’s distributed with the source contains instructions on how to get it to compile in XCode, you need to get PowerPlant and OpenPlay source code AND make modifications to both of them to get THEM to compile in XCode, so it’s not for the faint of heart.
But, it’s there, it compiles, links and runs as a Universal Binary and things can only get better from here.
TNT Basic is a free, open source games-oriented programming language with an integrated map editor and IDE. Getting it into XCode has been a time consuming project for them since the original product was done in the now defunct CodeWarrior and Powerplant.
Image Editor Pixen 3.0 Released
Pixen is an innovative graphics editor for the Mac. It’s designed from top to bottom for pixel artists—people who make low-resolution raster art like the sprites you see in old video games. But it’s great for artists of all arenas: Pixen is like a very powerful MSPaint or a simpler, more agile Photoshop. And best of all, it’s free under an MIT license!
An SDL -based engine that lets you create top down, turn-based RPGs in the style of the early Ultima games. A complete game, Haxima, is available as well.
Open Source Graphics Editor Xara Xtreme Needs Mac Developers
Xara Xtreme is a graphics editor similar to CorelDraw and Deneba Canvas that recently became an open source project. They need assistance in porting it to Linux and the Mac. The project uses wxWindows.
Ironically, given the dominance of the Mac in graphic design circles, there is no mass-market, high performance, easy-to-use graphic-design tools available for the Mac. For more than 10 years, we’ve had a continuous stream of Mac users asking, begging, that we port Xara X to their platform. By Open Sourcing the product we believe this is now a practical, realistic prospect.
With the likely elimination of Macromedia Freehand by the Adobe acquisition, Expression being acquired by Microsoft (who are unlikely to create any new Mac versions), this leaves the Mac platform with just a single serious player in this space – Adobe Illustrator. This near monopoly is not good for the Mac platform. We hope that Xara Xtreme on the Mac will change the graphics landscape for Mac users.
Tactical Simulation DropTeam Released
DropTeam™ is a multiplayer capable, real-time, tactical simulation of armored ground combat in the far future. You’ll battle for control of objectives on a broad variety of planets ranging from verdant Earth-like worlds to desolate, radioactive wastelands. You will use Dropship’s (see unit list) to land fighting vehicles and other deployable assets like sensors, mines and automated turrets on planetary surfaces. You will take direct control of various types of armored fighting vehicles while also coordinating your team, including AI, other human players, artillery support and more. Vast, exotic landscapes rendered in real-time with detailed, accurate physics and ballistics systems and true line-of-sight provide realistic combat. There are no “hit points”, limited view distances, unrealistically short weapon ranges, or other gross simplifications that are typical of many other sci-fi games. DropTeam™ can be played online on a public server with up to 16 players, or it can be played privately with as few as 2 players, as well as single-player vs. AI opponents. AI opponents can also be mixed in with human players in order to make the teams any size you like.DropTeam™ runs on Mac OS-X, Linux, and Windows 98/ME/2000/XP and has been designed to be very scalable with a wide range of systems.

Developing Games on Mac OS X Using Third-Party Game Engines
If you are looking for a way to accelerate your game development projects, take a look at this new article on Apple Developer Connection. It discusses four commercial third-party game engines for Mac OS X. Be sure to check the links in the article as well as iDevGames’ forum for additional information.
“We’ll look at each engine from several different angles and, at the end of the article, we’ll show the features of the four engines in a chart to help you compare the engines head-to-head. All come at nominal costs; some provide low indie pricing, and some have tiered pricing depending on the kind of development you are doing. See the website for each engine for their latest pricing information.”
Help Port 3D Modeler Sharp Construct
SharpConstruct is a 3D modeling program that paint depths on to polygon models in real-time. Unlike traditional modeling programs, SharpConstruct makes it easy to model organic shapes. There is no need to even look at a wireframe (unless you want to). Instead, the model is manipulated much like clay — push or pull an area, smooth it, make a hollow or a hill. The entire process is both simple and organic; you won’t need years of modeling experience to create detailed models in SharpConstruct.
This is an open source app similar to ZBrush. Its not available for Mac.
Maybe someone in the community could take a stab at porting it (an X11 version at least)?
