Pencil - A Cross Platform Animation/Image Editor

Written by Daniel Lurie | Sunday, March 18, 2007

Pencil is an animation/drawing software for Mac OS X and Windows. It lets you create traditional hand-drawn animation (cartoon) using both bitmap and vector graphics. Pencil is free and open source.

Looks great. This could be a useful tool for sprite work.

I tried it and it looked ok, but every time I added a frame, it removed all of the old frame. While this is useful, and it displays a shadow image of the last frame, I'd like a setting to keep the old frame's image and add/modify it in the next frame. But, I couldn't find one, so I had to copy/paste most of the time. I guess that is more in line with traditional paper/pencil animation as the theme of the program implies.

At first, this was really difficult for me to understand, but after working with it for a few days, i've discovered it is really quite cool and a highly usable app for pencil tests.

To Jero: try this, go to the frame you like, copy it, go to the next frame.. paste.. works like a charm.

I wish the selection box worked better. It's quite buggy. If you only want to copy a certain selection, its best to just paste the whole thing and erase what you dont like. Anyways, I've been using this quite a lot over the last two weeks... Strong recommend to animation students on a budget.. This won't do everything, but what it does do, it does well.

A quick tip I wish someone would have told me, the pan tool is multi-functional.. if you hold down command+click-drag mouse, you zoom.. if you hold down command + option + click-drag, you can rotate your whole canvas. Double click on the hand tool and you will be taken back to the default zoom and rotation angle.

Not quite sure if this will work well for animated game sprites however. Perhaps for a really rough sketch phase.. You will still need to go into something like Photoshop or Pixen I believe. Thank you again for making me aware of this program.(boy I need to visit idev more often!)
