Adults Spend More Time Playing Games Than Children

MacCentral reports of a telephone survey involving 1767 adults and 500 teens, conducted by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). The survey concludes about one-third of adult gamers spend 10 hours or more every week playing games, either on console or computer. Only 11% of teenage gamers played that same amount of time per week.

Other interesting statistics include 64% of adult gamers play console games by themselves, and about 55% play online.

Teens are much more likely to play online with consoles, especially teenage girls. Teens ages 12-14 played more often than ages 15-17. Industry analyst Steve Koenig, CEA’s senior manager, believes older teens tend to play more on mobile devices than dedicated consoles.

Adult gamers are more likely to play computer games, while teens primarily use consoles. 58% of houses with both a computer and a console identified the console as their primary gaming platform. The most common accessories purchased specifically to enhance the video game experience are AV cables, displays, furniture and receivers, markets that most iDG developers do not plan on entering anytime soon.

Movie rooms are fairly common in families with much disposable income, so how about dedicated video game rooms? While it may sound like a 40 year old virgin’s dream, 15% of adult computer gamers and 19% of adult console gamers said they would consider paying to have hardware installed to create a room specifically for gaming.
