Looking For An Alternative to WWDC?

Look no further than C4. It is a Mac Developer Conference focused more to the independent developer. The C4 conference was started 3 years ago by Jonathan “Wolf” Rentzsch. The first was C4, and the most recent conference was C4, held a few days ago. The conference featured all a Mac developer could want.

The conference was three days jam-packed with guest speakers who discussed a wide variety of topics. This session was the largest yet, with over 170 attendees that are going to be packed into the Doubletree hotel in Chicago, Illinois this month. Due to the large size of this year’s conference, Rentzsch feels they may have to use a lottery system to decide tickets next year.

In between the talks by the speakers, developers chat and trade hints and tricks and stories about developing. This year, talk about the iPhone ran through the conference. It was widely acknowledged to be just as important of a platform as the Mac. This year’s event was unique compared to last year’s because of the iPhone SDK having been released in the spring (in beta form, of course). Last year the only option was to Jailbreak the phone and develop that way. It has become a viable platform in the time since C4.

The conference ended with the “Iron Coder” competition, where developers are invited to submit something based on a framework and a theme to win a prize, this year, a loaded Macbook Air with a lot of software donated by a variety of companies. Developers had lots of good things to say about the conference, and many were excited to return the next year, hoping they would have good luck with the proposed lottery.
